This project tells the story of how a piece of raw oak was transformed into a stunning sign for Rebellion Brewery, ultimately making a cameo appearance in a Lloyds Bank advertisement. Follow along to see the journey from start to finish.
We received this vector logo from the client, providing the foundation for their custom wooden sign. Vector files ensure clean lines and scalability for the design.
We generated this detailed CAD mockup to visualize the final wooden sign. This collaborative step allows the client to confirm the design's accuracy and make any necessary adjustments before we move forward, minimizing the risk of errors and ensuring a perfect final product.
This impressive 220cm x 40cm x 27mm oak slab forms the foundation of the sign. Sourced from a certified sustainable forestry operation.
With the ebony dye applied, creating a striking backdrop, the oak is now ready for the intricate carving process that will bring the sign to life.
These two images capture the start of the carving process. First, the dyed oak is positioned on the CNC machine, fitted with an Amana #RC-1106 150-degree V-bit. Amana is renowned for their premium cutters, and this one is a true workhorse. The second image shows the machine beginning to carve the outline of the sign, precisely following the design.
From a flat surface to a textured masterpiece, the CNC machine carves the letters with precision. The first image highlights the carving in action, and the second showcases the emerging text, with sawdust marking the progress of the transformation.
The contrast between the dark ebony and the natural oak is truly striking. With half the sign complete, the beauty of the wood grain is clearly visible, adding depth and character to the lettering.
With the carving and cutting complete, the sign awaits the final stages of sanding and finishing.
From raw timber to a finished piece of art, this sign now graces the walls of Rebellion Brewery. The meticulous hand-sanding, the carefully applied clear lacquer finish, and the final polishing create a classic and inviting look, perfectly complementing the brewery's atmosphere. The lacquer enhances the natural beauty of the wood and ensures lasting durability.
The side view showcases how the finished sign seamlessly integrates into the bar's design. The reflections and subtle details enhance its presence, making it a focal point within the Rebellion Brewery's welcoming atmosphere.
The sharp contrast between the dark background and the now-golden, illuminated wood grain of the lettering is emphasised. The subtle backlight LEDs add depth and dimension to the finished piece.
